CORA MURPHY – Irish Landscape Artist
Originally from Ireland, I travelled extensively for 15 years before returning to live in Cork in 2008, when I abandoned conceptual art to focus on painting full time. Although abstract in form, my paintings are landscapes – they capture the essence and emotional significance of a place and / or time. While my influences are broad, my work is largely concerned with the natural world and our place in it
MY WORK & INSPIRATION
I take my inspiration on the land – literally – walking the land and observing nature.
Since moving back to Ireland, I have been fortunate to have been selected for a number of artists residencies. The solitary nature of these retreats has helped me to nurture my own painting style while making a direct response to the landscape.
I work in series principally in oils but enjoy experimenting with mixed media. My most recent work, The Sean Nós & the Sea, was made while on a 5-week fellowship at The Ballinglen Artists Foundation in Co. Mayo. I have previously made bodies of work in the Kerry Gaeltacht (‘Ballads to the Bog’), the Mayo Lakes (‘Tight Lines’) and throughout the country – in ‘Land of Plenty’. I have also created bodies of work in Southern Italy and Mexico. My ‘Mexican Odyssey’ , a body of work made while camping in the Baja Desert, toured Ireland in 2011.
